God of War III Q&A
Sony Santa Monica fills us in on its progress with Kratos' latest, and maybe final, battle against the gods.
by Chris Roper

December 8, 2009 - The end is beginning. Kratos' god-killing adventure is set to receive its third and final installment (for now) this coming March in God of War III, exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Sony's Santa Monica studio is hard at work on finishing up development on the game, and though we haven't seen anything new from it in some time, that doesn't mean the excitement for Kratos' finale isn't still sky-high. We're just as eager as anyone to know more about the game, so we spoke with the director on the title, Sony Santa Monica's Stig Asmussen, to find out where it is in development, when we'll get our next tease at the game and more. IGN: How far along is the game? Stig Asmussen: We are currently in the final stages of development. The entire game is together from start to finish and we're working our butts off putting on the finishing touches. We've been conducting external playtests and evaluating and addressing the feedback we've received, doing our best to incorporate it into the game. However, there are a couple of parts that still have pretty big question marks left. We have to do our best to work these out. But that is par for the course on God of War. Things always seem to come together at the end.

IGN: It's been a while since we've seen anything new. Are we going to get an updated look at the game before it ships, or are you trying to keep as much secret as possible?

Stig Asmussen: I imagine we will be giving out more information in the next couple of months. This is a tough one because we really want to show what we have been working so hard on, but at the same time, we don't want to give too much away and spoil the experience. We totally understand that there are a lot of fans that want to hear/see more, and we appreciate that immensely. However, the reality is that whenever we spend time on demos, presentations—even something as simple as a screen shot—it takes a measure of time away from the core production of the game. We try to set our standard of quality as high as possible, so whenever we make something public, there is an enormous amount of work that goes into it. So, I wouldn't say we have been consciously trying to keep things secret; we just want to make sure that our primary focus is making the final game the best it can be.

IGN: What have you thought of the feedback you've received for the current demo, and has it impacted anything for the retail release?

Stig Asmussen: It has definitely made an impact on the retail release. As I mentioned before, we do a lot of external playtesting, and there is no better playtest forum than a public demo. We came back from E3 with tons of feedback, and today I continue to read posts on forums. Any observations or feedback is good, and the more critical, the better. I try to focus on the things that people REALLY like or REALLY dislike. These usually turn out to be the areas that we end up spending most of our time on in the final months. Overall though, we have had very positive support on the demo, and it helps reinforce to us that what we are doing is worth it and to keep pushing forward.

IGN: On a similar note, the anticipation for God of War III is immense, and we'd assume that a lot rides on its success (for the franchise and the PS3 as a whole). How are you guys dealing with that pressure? Have you gotten used to it?

Stig Asmussen: I don't think 'getting used to it' really describes how we feel. We are 'aware' of it. The pressure exists. Although I think most of it is internal, meaning, we put it on ourselves. There is so much that we want to show/share and getting it all together in one package can create some pressure. But, we have an opportunity to make something that could potentially reach millions of people and so we want to take advantage of that.

IGN: Can you give us any sort of tease as to where the story is going, or some other gods that we might see?

Stig Asmussen: Unfortunately not. I don't want to spoil anything. However, like I have said before, the game picks up right where God of War II left off, so from that point on you'll have to use your imagination.

IGN: Have you guys worked with David Jaffe or Cory Barlog (directors of God of War I and II, respectively) at any point during the development?

Stig Asmussen: Cory was with the team as Game Director for the first eight months of development, so he has had a major impact on the game. He laid out the original concept/design and a large portion of that is still intact. Since he's moved on there hasn't been any formal collaboration, although I have spoken with him several times and bounced a few ideas off him. Dave has been around the studio a few times and we've spoken as well. On a few occasions we've gone over some high level stuff with him to get his observations and feedback.

IGN: The end is near for you guys, and perhaps Kratos as well. Are you excited to finish the trilogy and maybe move onto something new, or is it going to be a bittersweet end of development for you?

Stig Asmussen: Honestly, I can't answer that question right now. I'm so deep into God of War III that I can't see beyond the next couple of weeks. What I am most excited about right now is getting all of the final pieces of this game in place. We are so very close!

great interview but when's some more info gonna come out?

The Ronin Boss said...

"We are so very close!"...Awesome, can´t wait to see what you guys have done;if the demo was great(and I haven't played it), and you guys are just improving, polishing the game, it will be definitely epic.

And don't worry about releasing new stuff, I mean, it would be great though, but if that means that you'll be distracted from the final game, then we, or at least I, can definetly wait. Keeping your blog updated from time to time, should be enough, with things like that picture, funny.Do yo know where exactly it is?, I would like to see it myself, given that I live here.

And it's great to see that PlayStation finally is working on it's publicty. I remember that for the ps1 and ps2 there was almost none, here in Mexico. And I believe that's one of the reasons the PS3 haven't had the impact this console should have. I mean, the first add that I see of this generation, was of the wii, then the xbox, and it wasn't until this year that I've seen the ones for the PS3. Also the xbox sponsors a lot of stuff, like tv shows, here for example there is "Joystickeros" from MTV, and I thought that that wouldn't affect the show, but in a recent transmission they were talking about the Top 5 most anticipated upcoming games, and they placed GoW3 at number five(the least anticipated), but not only that, they placed Dante's Inferno in 3, don't get me wrong that game shure looks great(because it looks like god of war!), but come on, that's a new game, It has no fans, people like it because of it's resemblance with GoW, in gore and gameplay. So how can that game, be more anticipated, than an end-trilogy game with lots of fans? For me it's because Dante's is playable on the xbox, and the xbox sponsors that show.

Anyway, I went off track, so again, thanks for all your work, can't wait to see the final game.

"Cory was with the team as Game Director for the first eight months of development, so he has had a major impact on the game. He laid out the original concept/design and a large portion of that is still intact."

That's cool but we don't learn anything about the game in this interview. :'(

Anonymous said...

this interview had no spirit and purpose...
he said nothing new.

Anonymous said...

I really respect the fact that the developers must not distract from the main goal(making the game as great as possible) with too much media events and etc...
But making a screenshots is distracting ??Why?If you have the game playable from start to end and the engine is pretty much done, making a dozen screenshots should be hard at all...

Anonymous said...

right! making a screenshot takes two weeks of hard work...

Anonymous said...

....gotta get a ps3 soon for this lol, hey Bruno, mind telling Stig and the team to get rid of that purple glow on Hades' chained hooks if they haven't done so already......? Thanks for the updates, keep 'em coming!

Indeed it is. A very cool looking boss fight. If you are suggesting that GoW3 can't top it though... well... that's just silly. I can't wait to play Bayonetta though. It should warm me up for some final epic Kratos action!

There are gonna be a total of over 7000 enemies in the game? Holy crap!

Dennis said...

would you ****ing stop bashing the developers? its only 3 more months until the game's released. in the mean time, keep yourself entertained with the demo or infamous or killzone 2.
The team has clearly stated the rationale behind not releasing more contents at the moment, and i dont see anything wrong with that. it's not like a few screenshots is gona add a lot more info onto what we already know.

Anonymous said...

Man, Mexicans really hate their mothers-in-law.

I assume the 7000 enemies refers to PS3 games in general and not just God of War, but it is kind of a confusing ad.

Anonymous said...

@Dennis
Kissass!

rocky said...

sir, will the game run at native 1080p resolution

Dennis said...

@Anonymous
whatever man. im just a fan like everyone else, but with more sense than some.

Jack said...

The 7000 enemies thing is NOT meant to be taken literally. It is just making a point for the sake of the advertisement.

And here's my ad:

HEY GUYS!
Let's see if you can fill this comments section with another 300 comments that IN NO WAY help the developers! You know, like asking for screenshots! And asking about the resolution and frames per second! Yeah! It will be great! Screw constructive criticism! They don't want to hear about what we thought of the demo or what we loved or hated about the last games! Yeah! Come on guys! It'll be great!

OR NOT!!!

Jack said...

Oh, and Rock on Santa Monica!

Anonymous said...

I don't know who said that the game will be 1080p native? How many games are 1080p native(not upscaled ) ,so to ask GOW3 to be 1080p...?Hmmm not many right ;)

Anonymous said...

At the beginning of the developpement Barlog said that the game would be in 1080p.

But that's not the case, the game is 720p native.

sir Bruno, has the comparison between god of war 3 gameplay and god of war 2 cg footage made u guys a bit complacent or more inspired to make the game even better?

Anonymous said...

Well... The last showed footage(E3 demo) had still some differences compared to the GOW2 CGI.The cloth and the chains around Kratos forearms was better in the CGI.However that was old build ,cannot wait to see how the game looks now.

So why we need to read about Bayonetta ?

gow-fan said...

One technical question:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-saboteur-aa-blog-entry
Will GOW3 use this kind of anti-aliasing (or similar ) to get rid of any jaggies ???
It will be really nice, because in the demo there is some jaggies...I know it is like one year before release engine version ,but it always good to ask. ;)
However is there will be some kind of technical developer diary about the engine before the game release(or on the game disc)? It will be very interesting .Something like what Naughty dog made about Uncharted.

Xcalibur said...

http://playstationlifestyle.net/2009/12/09/god-of-war-3-embargo-is-withholding-awesomeness/

Get ready for new info on January guys :)

gow-fan said...

That's it!Now we now when there will be info, when the gates will be open.I'm happy! One more month, thank God!

Anonymous said...

@gow-fan regarding anti-aliasing

I'm sure Sony Santa Monica has the absolute best knowledge about how to work the PS3 technically, and the image quality of GOW3 is already amazing in terms of edge smoothness. Just look at Kratos in the dark with the Helios head equipped.

They're probably using the cell in many clever ways including for anti-aliasing. It's not like the Saboteur has the best AA out there, it's just an interesting tech story because it's done on the Cell instead of the GPU.

Unknown said...

Hi, bruno..
From a recent issue of Gamepro, I read that the team has an added ‘motion blur’ to Kratos’ weapons when you use them. Sweet!
is this true..?

Anonymous said...

Yes this about the motion blur I read it too.It is awesome ,I'm sure.Cannot wait to see it in action

Anonymous said...

Thank you so much for making the best game EVER.Just one question:If you are battling an enemy, like the chimera, and you weaken it until the circle shows up,can you use some other weapon like the cestus to finish of the chimera or kill it with the blades of chaos.
I agree with you and the other developers about not releasing media, but a few screenshots or a 1 minute video won`t hurt no one.
Ohh,PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE make the release date worldwide.I live in europe and i don`t want to wait any longer than march.

Anonymous said...

i just tried the demo of Bayonetta and i have to say, we have 1 less competitor to worry about. The the gameplay isnt that fantastic, not very fluid. Weapon-wise, GOW beats it, hands down. In one of the skills, the character strips down to what looks like borat's mankini.
The graphic is good, but nothing compared to what we've seen in GOW3. And lastly, the storyline seems boring.

Anonymous said...

http://www.gamersdigest.net/4219/dante%e2%80%99s-inferno-divine-edition/
lol so thats how they hope to compete with god of war 3

Anonymous said...

Today there will be demo of Dante's inferno at USA psn...Will try it for my self.
However I don't think that Bayonetta(i didn't like it at all) ,Dante's Inferno,Darksiders and etc. have any chance(even minor) to overshadow GOW3.Yes january people maybe will talk about those games ,but you will see that when GOW3 information embargo is lifted and flood gates open, everybody will turn their attention to the king(god ;)) of the games. The game which define the meaning of word epicness for games. So nothing to worry.Just wish January to come faster ...
The only regret is that GOW3 will not have movie like Dante's inferno animation, but let's hope some day there will be real high budget GOW movie.

Anonymous said...

the floodgates are (or should be) already open...

Anonymous said...

@heracles

You probably will not receive answers to questions that have already been answered in GamePro. Why would Bruno spend the time to do that?

@Anonymous critiquing Bayonetta

The story and graphics aren't that great, but to say the game isn't fluid is beyond retarded. It's got a very fluid and deep combat system.

THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT WILL "BEAT" GOD OF WAR. Stop being so threatened by other games. It doesn't have the mass appeal of GOW so it won't overshadow it in sales. And what if it did? Why do you care?

Anonymous said...

see post

Anonymous said...

There is people that didn't like Bayonetta, what's wrong with that and they should be criticized for this?
I also didn't like the demo and won't buy the full version,I don't like the art style of the game and for me this is the most important.Combat system is on the second and even third place when I judge some game.
I also think that GOW3 should be worried by any game,no matter how big is the hype around it.This is God of war after all

Anonymous said...

About the post above:
I also think that GOW3 SHOULDN'T be worried about any game,no matter how big is the hype around it...
Damn writing mistakes ;)

Anonymous said...

is it true that if gow 3 wwins the award for the most ancipated game on saturday we will see a new trailer? at the minimum :-)?

Anonymous said...

I didn't say people have to like Bayonetta. I was saying that calling Bayonetta's combat "not fluid" is factually wrong, unless I have a drastically different definition of "fluid" than the other guy.

I don't like the art style of Bayonetta either, but I'm not going to diss its gameplay just because I like GOW more.

Online Casinos
For the longest time, when people wanted to play table games, they had to get in the car or get on a
plane and head to a casino. This is not the case anymore, as online casinos have popped up all over
the place to help players get the action they are looking for. Some people do not trust online casinos,
but in reality there is no reason why you should ever doubt them. Online casinos are incredibly
easy to use and they are reliable in nature. So how can you find a good online casino? The first
thing that you need is a site that you can trust. Without that, you really do not have much at all.
Online casinos must be trustworthy in how they handle your money and also how they handle the fairness
of the games. You should know that all online casinos are required to submit to regulation from an
independent casino monitoring source.
